Odeya Rushinek was born to an Ashkenazi Jewish family in Haifa, Israel. Her mother Maya Greenfeld was born in Soviet Russia and emigrated to Israel, whilst her father Shlomo Rushinek is a Sabra (Jew born in Israel). Her first name means “I shall praise God” in Hebrew. She started writing and performing plays when she was eight years old in her birthplace of Haifa, Israel.

When she was nine years old, her family emigrated to the US so that her father could accept a position as a security consultant in Alabama.
